In 1999, Matthew Good Band released Beautiful Midnight, one of the year’s best rock albums. More than 300,000 copies were sold and the Vancouver band ended up winning two Junos, including Rock Album of the Year and Group of the Year.
Three years later, the frontman and most of his bandmates — including Dave Genn and Ian Browne — went their separate ways. Good has since released seven studio albums, and for his next effort, I Miss New Wave, due Dec. 2, he’s revisiting five tunes from Beautiful Midnight — including Load Me Up, Suburbia and I Miss New Wave.
“I’ve waited almost 20 years to reimagine these songs in the studio; I think I may have actually bettered what some consider my best work,” he says in a statement.
Good will also perform Beautiful Midnight in its entirety during a Canadian tour — including a Feb. 25 stop at the River Cree Entertainment Centre.
Tickets will go on sale Nov. 18 via ticketmaster.ca. A presale starts Nov. 15. Prices have yet to be announced.
• On the flipside … Blackie and the Rodeo Kings first began when a bunch of solo performers wanted to record an album of Willie P. Bennett tunes.
They had no intention of becoming an ongoing band, but 20 years later … Tom Wilson, Colin Linden and Stephen Fearing are still on the Rodeo circuit.
The roots-rock trio will perform March 9 at the Winspear Centre. Tickets are $30, $40 and $60 plus service charges. On sale: Nov. 18 via winspearcentre.com.
They’ll be promoting their ninth album, Kings and Kings, which features guest appearances by Bruce Cockburn, Vince Gill, Eric Church, Jason Isbell, Nick Lowe and seven other impressive performers.
